Inch"的缩写，即每英寸所打印的点数或线数，用来表示打印机分辨率，即通常所说的硬件分辨率。这是衡量打印机精度的一大标准，一般来说，该值越大，表明打印机的精度越高。

对扫描仪、打印机及显示器等硬件设备来说，其分辨率用每英寸上可产生的点数即DPI（Dots

在英语里面的写法与在中文里面的写法是相同的，都写1/8"，中文读作：八分之一英寸（8/64"只有在非常特定的场合下才使用）。

英制里其实没有英分和英丝这种单位，1英寸以下的长度，用英寸的分数来表示，如1/2 "、1/4 "、1/8" 、1/16"、1/32"、1/64 "等。把1/8英寸 叫1英分，这是“汉化”的说法，现在甚至连“英”字也省略了，例如买一个3英分20齿的链轮，你只要说：买一个3分20齿的链轮，别人绝对不会误会。这种叫法在我国流行很广，但这个单位在真正的英制中却是没有的。

前面我已经说了，在特定的场合下有可能使用不约简的分数，原因是为了比较，例如：1/64"与2/64"让人一看就明白后者比前者大，以免多一个让人家算错的机会，反正总的感觉是英制的单位比较乱，没有公制来得整齐。
