1 Jehan Daas was a very old man. He lived in a small village. The village was in a part of Belgium called Flanders. The village was near the sea and the big city of Antwerp. There were only twenty houses in the village and they were all painted white. Flat green fields surrounded the village. All the villagers raised cows and grain. In the middle of the town was a windmill. The villagers all brought their grain to the miller. A church was also in the middle of the town. The church was gray and had a bell in its steeple. Jehan’s house was on the edge of the village. It was tiny. Jehan did not have a farm. He had only a little garden. In his garden he grew some cabbage and carrots and turnips. Jehan was hurt in the war and could not move well. Jehan was very, very poor. His job was to take the farmers’ milk to Antwerp to sell. He did this by pulling a cart himself. In the evening he returned and gavethe money to the farmeres and returned the empty milk cans. This was his job only because people felt sorry for him. When Jehan was eighty years old, his daughter died. His daughter had lived in a city far away. After she died, Jehan learned that she had had a son. Now Jehan had to take care of a 2-year-old child. It was difficult, but Jehan loved the boy. He was no longer lonely. The boy was beautiful. His name was Nicholas. Jeha gave him the nickname Nello.Nello had lovely blond hair and dark innocent eyes. They had little money and food, but they were very happy. Nello brought Jehan much joy.
